BOX SCORE
CALGARY – The Dinos capped off their 2012-13 season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-19) win over the Regina Cougars on Feb. 9 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
Despite their final win of the Canada West regular season, the Dinos (8-14) did not qualify for playoffs. The same can be said of the Regina Cougars (2-20).
Dino Sean Martin scored a game-high 14.5 points on 12 kills, an ace and 1.5 blocks. Outside hitter Greg Mann was the other Dino to hit double digits on the night with 10 points. Setter Alex Cook picked up 26 assists in the win.
Andrew Nelson led the Cougars again with 12.5 points and Rhodri Simmons followed that up with 10 kills of his own. Setter Caleb Eschbach tied Cook's assists at 26.
The first set saw the Dinos take an early lead and they dominated throughout the set, up until the technical timeout. After the break, the Cougars cut the Dinos lead in half, forcing Calgary to regroup. The visitors continued to fight until the end of the set, but it would ultimately be the home team taking the win 25-23.
In the second, Calgary once again controlled the game from the on-set. The Dinos' offence, sparked by Connor Frehlich coming off the bench on the left-side, was on fire. Martin ended the set with a game-high eight kills thus far as Calgary went on to win it 25-14.
Tied throughout the beginning of the third, the Dinos worked hard to pull away and take the lead. They earned a three point lead at the technical timeout and from there maintained it. Martin finished the set for Calgary with a massive kill from the left-side to solidify the 25-19 third set win.
The Dinos are set to host the 2014 Men's Volleyball CIS Championships next March at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
