Cougars outlast Dinos

BOX SCORE REGINA - The University of Regina's women's volleyball team outlasted the Calgary Dinos for a five-set win on Friday night in a wild Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport (25-27, 25-23, 23-25, 25-9, 15-11).

Tori Glynn had 16 kills and 13 digs for the Cougars and narrowly missed out on a rare triple-double as she set a University of Regina single-match record with eight service aces in the victory.

The first three sets were decided by the minimum two points, with Calgary starting out the match with a 27-25 win in the first before the Cougars replied with a 25-23 victory in the second. The Dinos matched that with a 25-23 win of their own in the third, but the fourth set was a completely different animal.

The Cougars (1-4) jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the fourth set with both Michelle Sweeting and Glynn serving up three consecutive aces during the early run. The U of R ended up with an incredible total of eight service aces in the fourth set alone, which the Cougars won 25-9 to force a fifth set.

In the deciding set, the Cougars forced a Calgary timeout after three consecutive points gave the home side a 7-3 lead. The Cougars led by as many as seven points in the fifth and cruised to a 15-11 victory to clinch their first Canada West win of the season.

The Cougars ended up with four different players in double digits for kills. Desiree Ates led all players with 17 kills and added 12 digs for a double-double, while both Glynn and Michelle Sweeting had 16 kills. Rookie setter Leah Shevkenek had 50 assists and collected 11 digs, while Chelsea Ziolkowski also broke into double figures with 12 kills.

As effective as the Cougars were at serving, Calgary was equally impressive at the net. The Dinos (3-2) had a total of 19 blocks and Emma Pedersen was in on 13 of them, as the second-year middle ended up with three solo blocks and 10 block assists. Pedersen added nine kills and hit a team-high .364, while Janna Ogle chipped in offensively with a team-leading 11 kills. Ali Woolley had nine kills for the Dinos and tied Glynn for the match high with 13 digs.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night with first serve scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the CKHS.

NOTES: Glynn's eight aces came on 23 serves ... Sweeting added four aces, Shevkenek had three, Ates had two, and Lindsay Braul and Ziolkowski both had one as the Cougars combined for 19 as a team.
