Dinos get past Cougars in five

BOX SCORE REGINA - The Dinos men's volleyball team went the distance once again in Canada West play this year, taking a 15-11 decision in the fifth to clinch a 3-2 victory over the University of Regina Cougars Friday night (25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 21-25, 15-11).

Four Dinos broke into double figures in kills as Calgary improves to 3-2 on the season, led by Greg Mann's 15. Connor Frehlich added 14 kills for the Calgary, while Ivan Kartev and Sean Tuff both added 12 kills.

Rhodri Simmonds had a fine match for the Cougars, leading all players in both kills (17) and blocks (7) and adding eight digs.

Calgary took an early lead in the match after winning the first two sets by 25-23 and 25-20 margins. But playing for the first time this season on their home court, the Cougars won the third and fourth sets by 25-21 scores to send the match to a fifth.

The two teams weren't separated by more than two points in the fifth set until back-to-back kills by Mann and Frehlich gave the Dinos a 14-11 lead. Calgary put the match away after a quick set by Jackson Maris set up Tuff for the final point.

Mann added 13 digs for Calgary to notch the lone double-double of the match and also had a match-high four aces, while Dinos libero Andrew Visser led all players with 15 digs. Maris ended up with 51 assists and seven digs for the Dinos, who improve to 3-2 on the season with the victory.

Andrew Nelson had 17 kills for the Cougars and tied Simmonds for the team lead with eight digs as the U of R drops to 0-5 on the season. Caleb Eschbach had 49 assists and seven digs, while Nathan Cherwaty chipped in with seven kills, seven digs, and four blocks.

The two teams will clash again at the CKHS on Saturday night following the conclusion of the women's match.

NOTES: Calgary has gone the full five sets in all five of their Canada West matches so far this season.
