BOX SCORE
CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team suffered their fifth consecutive loss on Nov. 30 when they fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-20) to the UBC Okanagan Heat at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
Both Ali Woolley and Janna Ogle had nine kills for the Dinos in their loss with Woolley picking up a team-high 12 digs. Setter Jordhynn Guy recorded a game-high 29 assists.
For the Okanagan Heat, Megan Festival had a great game, scoring 12 kills and recording a game-high 19 digs. Kaitlynn Given also recorded 12 kills. Libero Lenai Schmidt picked up 14 digs and setter Emily Oxland recorded 26 assists.
In the first set, both teams battled it out as they remained tied through seven points. As the set progressed, the Dinos continued to find holes in the court, going up 13-10, thanks to some strong play from rookie Ogle. Forcing the Heat to call a timeout, they came out from it on fire, going on a 5-0 run to take the lead. The lead changed on more time before the technical timeout as Calgary was up 16-15 at the break.
The momentum continued to shift between both teams, but it was the Heat that finally tied it up at 19, and then took the lead 22-19. Despite the slow start by the visitors, their resiliency took them to the first set win by a score of 25-22. Woolley already had nine digs in the match and Festival had recorded five kills at that point.
In the second, Calgary came out flat on both offence and defence. Down 6-1 and out of sync, the Dinos continued to let the Heat dominate the set. Middle Katie Wuttunee was a major factor in the set, blocking a number of Dinos as well as finding holes all over the court.
UBC Okanagan's lead was a span of ten points at the technical and from there, they went on to win it 25-8 as the Dinos serve receive was less than stellar in the second.
The third set saw the Dinos regain their game and despite the Heat taking an early 12-8 lead, Calgary fought back with a 3-0 run to get within one. That was as close as they would get though, as they were unable to break the lead and headed into the technical down 16-13.
After the timeout, the Heat stopped middle Jaylynn Moffatt twice at the net to take a five point lead. Angelica Quiring pulled off a couple of blocks late in the game, but it was the Heat taking the third and final set of the match 25-20.
Both teams will be back at it Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in the final game of the first half of the season.
