BOX SCORE CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos took out the UBC Okanagan Heat on Nov. 23 when they beat them 75-69 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
Calgary now holds a .500 record with four wins and four losses, while the Heat have yet to pick up a win this season.
Once again, Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson led the Dinos, scoring a game-high 24 points, three assists and four rebounds in the Dinos' win. Josh Turner was also a major factor in Calgary's win with 17 points and five rebounds and forward Matt Letkeman recorded 14 points and six rebounds. Philip Barndt led all players with nine rebounds on the night.
For the Heat, Yassine Ghomari scored a team-high 20 points and seven rebounds followed by Landry Ndayitwayeko with 16 points and James Lum with 13.
The first was very low scoring to start the game, with both teams' defence a big factor. The first basket of the night wasn't scored until two minutes in, but from there, the Dinos began to build up a lead. Turner's three-pointer to end the quarter put Calgary dowm by four at 15-11.
In the second, another three-pointer from Turner would allow the Dinos to get back in the game and a couple of lead changes would occur before the Heat could take over again. Ghomari already had 12 points for UBC Okanagan and they took a nine point lead at 32-23.
Full court pressure gave the Dinos trouble throughout the quarter and the Heat would get their biggest lead of the game at ten points with two minutes left. A late 4-0 run gave the Dinos a boost as they trailed the Heat 40-33 at the end of the second.
Despite being down at half, Calgary's 7-0 run to start the second half tied the score up at 40. Later in the frame, the Dinos would finally take the lead with two back-to-back three's from Ogungbemi-Jackson at 48-47. Both teams went on to battle it out and they headed into the fourth tied at 57.
In the final quarter, the Dinos went on a 6-0 run gaining a 63-57 lead before the Heat got back on the board. There was a scoring lull from both teams as they were unable to score, but UBC Okanagan got back within four with four minutes remaining.
A deep three from Jhony Verrone put the Dinos back up and Ogungbemi-Jackson followed that up with a jumper to take an eight point lead. Fighting for their life, the Heat were unable to hit some key shots in the final minutes of the game, and the Dinos went on to win their fourth game of the season, defeating UBC Okanagan 75-69.
The Brandon Bobcats will invade the Jack Nov. 28-29 in a short turn around week for the Dinos. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday night.
For the Heat, they will host the UNBC Timberwolves in their last regular season games of 2013 on Nov. 29-30.
