BOX SCORE CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos were defeated by the No. 3 Trinity Western Spartans 3-1 (23-25, 25-9, 25-20, 25-21) at Jack Simpson Gym on Nov. 15.
Leading the way for the Dinos was once again second-year hitter
Ali Woolley. She had a team-high 14 kills in the match along with nine digs. Jana Ogle recorded another nine kills from the right side and had 12 digs. Libero
Courtney Davis picked up a game-high 15 digs.
For the Spartans, Sophie Carpentier scored a game-high 15 kills and recorded 10 digs. Left-side Royal Richardson had another 13 digs for Trinity Western. Setter Lauren Moncks recorded a game-high 43 assists in the match.
In the first, the Dinos took the lead from the get-go in front of a big crowd at the Jack. The Spartans finally found a way to tie it at ten with a block from Perrin. Despite Trinity Western taking over the lead for a few points, the Dinos led 16-15 at the technical timeout. The second half of the set saw the Dinos not allowing the Spartans to make the comeback or take the lead and Woolley's kill would end the set 25-23.
The second set was much different for Calgary as Trinity Western was off to an 8-3 lead, forcing Dinos head coach
Natalie Gurnsey to call an early timeout. The timeout didn't do much to help the Dinos come back as they slipped to 16-5 at the technical. The Spartans went on to easily take the second set 25-9 with the Dinos hitting percentage in the negatives.
Trinity Western didn't let up in the third. Shutting down all of Calgary's big hitters including Woolley and Ogle, the Dinos had trouble generating offence to start the set. The Spartans' defence in the back court didn't help Calgary's situation as they headed into the technical down 16-6.
After the timeout, the Dinos found some confidence back in their hitting and began to pick up points and close the gap. Despite their best efforts, and getting within four points, Trinity Western won the set 25-20.
In a must-win fourth set for Calgary, they came back out to play with some tight points being played throughout the beginning of the set. Carpentier was the first to reach ten kills on the court for the Spartans in the fourth as they led 10-7.
An injury to one of the Spartans' big hitters gave the Dinos an opportunity to regroup. Calgary finally found a way to tie the game at 14 with a block from Woolley, but the Dinos headed into the technical down 16-14. Trinity Western didn't allow much to drop throughout the remainder of the set, and they went on to win it 25-21.
The Dinos will have a chance to get revenge on the No. 3 Spartans tomorrow night when they face them again at 6 p.m.
