No. 1 Spartans defeat Dinos

BOX SCORE CALGARY – The No. 1 Trinity Western Spartans came into Calgary undefeated and so far, they remain with a spotless record with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 26-24) win over the University of Calgary Dinos at Jack Simpson Gym on Nov. 15.
 
Left-side Connor Frehlich had a game-high 12 digs and was the only Dino to get into double digits in kills with 12, also good for a game high. Alex Cook came off the bench to set for a game-high 26 assists and Greg Mann added another six kills for Calgary.
 
For the Spartans, Derek Thiessen had 12 kills, followed up by Brad Kufske who had ten kills and 11 digs on the night. Libero Tyler Koslowsky had nine digs in the match.
 
The Dinos had trouble in the first set right from the get-go with Trinity Western jumping out to a 15-8 lead. With Keith West serving, the Dinos closed the gap to five before the technical timeout. Trying to get past that five-point gap, the Dinos got within four at 21-18 with an ace from Darcee Froese followed by a kill down the line from West.
 
Some big rallies occurred nearing the end of the first set and two hitting errors by the Spartans got Calgary within two at 24-22, but a timeout from the visitors helped them close out the set the following point.
 
Calgary began to pick it up in the second set, but had trouble getting within more than two points to the Spartans' lead. With the Spartans up 19-15, the Dinos called a timeout looking for a way to win it. A great set from Sean Tuff helped the Dinos produce at the net as they got within one at 22-21. Unfortunately for the home team, the No. 1 Spartans prevailed once again, winning it 25-23.
 
In the third, the Dinos led early on at 9-5 and maintained that lead until Trinity Western tied it at 14. From there, they took the lead at the technical 16-14. After the timeout, the Dinos tied it back up with a big kill from Frehlich. Calgary did their best to force the fourth, but they crumbled in the final points, as the Spartans showed why their No. 1 in the country. They needed extra points to do it as they won 26-24.
 
The Dinos and the Spartans will rematch in the second installment of their double header tomorrow night. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
