BOX SCORE CALGARY –
Ali Woolley's 28 points helped lead the Dinos to their first win of the season in a five set match (25-23, 17-25, 23-25, 25-19, 16-14) over the Mount Royal Cougars that needed extra points to decide the winner at Jack Simpson Gym, Oct. 26.
Woolley's 28 points came from a game-high 25 kills and 6 block assists. She also had 14 digs for the Dinos. Middle
Emma Pedersen had another 14 points for Calgary in the five-set victory.
For the Cougars, Julia Pasieka had a team-high 18 kills, followed by 16 from Marni Mackay. Mackenzie Allen recorded a game-high 62 assists.
In the opening set, the Dinos battled with the Cougars to within one point of the technical timeout. After that, Mount Royal took a 20-15 lead, putting Calgary in the hole and needing to make up some points. From there, the Dinos rallied to score eight of the next nine points to even up the set. It came down to the final points where the Dinos won it 25-23.
The Dinos hoped to carry over the momentum into the second set, but were unable to do so as the Cougars held a steady lead throughout the set. The score read 25-17, with the biggest point deficit in any set of the match.
Once again in the all-important third set, it remained close throughout the entirety of it. The Cougars too a three-point lead after the technical timeout, and from there the Dinos were able to close the gap at 23 all. Mount Royal capitalized on the final two points for the go ahead set to make it 2-1.
In the fourth, Woolley had accumulated up to 21 kills at the point, slowly taking control of the game for the Dinos. They're hot start dissipated then the Cougars tied it at 12, but the Dinos headed into the technical up 16-14. From there the Dinos built up their lead to as much as six, winning it and forcing a fifth with a score of 25-19.
In a tight fifth set, both teams remained within one point of each other all the way until 14 points. From there, Woolley took matters into her own hands, making a kill and then ending the match with a big block for the Dinos to win their first regular season game.
