BOX SCORE CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team won their first game of the regular season on Oct. 26 when they took down the visiting Mount Royal Cougars 3-2 (25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 15-6) in a five-set battle at Jack Simpson Gymnasium. Calgary now leads the Crowchild Classic series 5-2 over the Mount Royal Cougars.
Connor Frehlich led all players with a game-high 19 kills in the match.
Sean Tuff recorded 11 kills of his own and
Darcee Froese added 10 kills and a game-high 16 digs in the Dinos win. Setter
Jackson Maris recorded a game-high 42 assists.
For the Cougars, Colton deMan had a team-high 15 kills in the match. Tommy Lyon and Trevor Langvand both added 10.5 points more for Mount Royal.
The Dinos got off to a great start in right off the bat as they took a four-point lead at 11-7. Despite that lead, the Cougars fought back to overtake them and head into the technical timeout ahead. As the set went one, the lead changed once again, back into Calgary's favour at 18-17. The Dinos went on to win the first one 25-22.
In the second set, Calgary was on fire, cruising to a 16-10 technical timeout, and then gaining a lead as big as eight points at 20-12. Although Mount Royal put up a last ditch effort to save the set, the Dinos took a two-set lead with a 25-21 win.
The following two sets saw the Cougars finally turn up the heat on their side of the court. Both games, Mount Royal didn't give up the lead once , making sure to force the fifth-set, setting up a huge comeback. They won those sets 25-21 and 25-18, respectively.
In the fifth, the tables turned once again as the Dinos were determined to get the job done after losing to the Cougars the previous night. At the switch they had a cushiony 8-2 lead and allowed Mount Royal to score just six points total in the set as they went on to win it 15-6.
The Dinos head to Kamloops next weekend to take on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
