CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team fell to the visiting Alberta Pandas 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-25), Oct. 17 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium at the Dino Cup.
The first set saw the Pandas take big lead while both teams tried to get out their first set jitters. Despite the Dinos best efforts to get back in it, the lead was too big to overcome. Alberta went on to win the first set 25-18. Alberta's Meg Cassault had already accumulated eight kills, while Calgary's
Ali Woolley had picked up six digs.
In the second, the Pandas took an early lead once again and it took up until ten points for Calgary to tie it back up. For the Dinos, the chemistry on the floor was working in their favour and after the technical timeout; they went on a run taking a 19-15 lead. Another 4-0 run took them to 23-16 and they tied up the game at one set apiece.
Calgary and Alberta battled it out in the third set, with the Pandas maintaining a slight lead. At the technical, the Dinos trailed 16-14. Despite the evenly matched set with both teams playing some great defence, Alberta won it 25-22.
Maura Hayes had recorded 11 digs after the third and two players from Alberta, including Cassault and Karly Janssen, had already scored 13 kills.
In the fourth, the Pandas had the confidence to slowly take down the Dinos. They went on to win the final and game-winning set 25-15.
For Calgary, Woolley had a team-high 15 kills and 11 digs. Right side and rookie
Janna Ogle added 11 kills of her own in her first game in Jack Simpson Gymnasium as well as 11 digs. Setter
Jordhynn Guy recorded 35 assists.
The Pandas were led by Cassault who ended the match with a game-high 18 kills. Janssen followed close behind with 13 of her own and 16 digs. Libero Jessie Niles had a game-high 18 digs on the night.
The Dinos and Pandas go at it again on Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. in a re-match at the Jack.
