O-J leads Dinos to dramatic OT win

BOX SCORE WINNIPEG - The University of Calgary Dinos picked up a dramatic 93-86 overtime victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
 
The two teams were tied 82-82 after regulation time. Calgary outscored Winnipeg 11-4 in the extra frame to improve their regular season record to 8-7. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 11-5.
 
Winnipeg native Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson led the Dinos with 24 points and completed the double-double hauling down 10 rebounds. Thijin Moses finished with a double-double of his own scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while Josh Owen-Thomas had 17 points and Dallas Karch added 14.
 
Steven Wesley led the Wesmen with a double-double consisting of 30 points and 12 rebounds. Fifth year forward Benny Iko added 15 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Andrew Cunningham dished out 12 assists while scoring 11 points. Samuel Hattin came off the bench to score 10.
 
Calgary started the high-paced opening quarter on a good note outscoring the Wesmen 10-2 in the early stages. Winnipeg fought back to tie the score at 12-12 with 3:37 remaining to play in the quarter. The Dinos pushed ahead in the final minute to lead 23-19 after the opening frame.Winnipeg carried the play and managed to take the lead back in the second quarter until some late period heroics by Calgary. A three point play by Ogungbemi-Jackson with 13 seconds left tied the score at 38-38 heading into the halftime break. Winnipeg struggled from the perimeter in the opening half connecting on 3-of-16 from three-point territory.
 
The Dinos came out of the halftime break on fire going on a 10-2 run to open up a 48-40 lead with just over 5:00 to play. Winnipeg once again came back and managed to tie the score at 55-55 on a Steven Wesley three-pointer with 1:40 left in the third. Benny Iko nailed a three-pointer with 30 seconds to play to give the Wesmen a 59-55 lead after three.
 
In the fourth quarter the teams battled which set up a dramatic final minute. Winnipeg held a 77-73 after a pair of threes by Iko but Calgary answered back on a three pointer by Owen-Thomas with just over a minute left to trail 77-76. After a Winnipeg miss, Ogungbemi-Jackson drained a three with 31 seconds left in regulation to give Calgary a 79-77 lead. A trio of free-throws extended the lead to 82-77 with 18 seconds remaining setting up the dramatics.

Winnipeg's Travis Krahn went two-for-three from the free throw line to cut the Calgary lead to 82-79. After a Calgary timeout, Benny Iko came up with a steal and was fouled on a three-point attempt with five seconds left in regulation. Iko calmly sank all three foul shots to tie the score at 82-82 forcing the extra frame.
 
The teams will wrap up their two game series Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 7 p.m. MT.
