Dinos drop heartbreaker in five

| By:
BOX SCORE KELOWNA - They looked to be in full control of the match after two sets - but the Dinos let one slip away Friday night, falling in five sets to the UBC Okanagan Heat (25-20, 25-13, 15-25, 25-27, 16-18).

A slow start for the Heat, coupled with strong play from the University of Calgary, allowed the visiting Dinos to jump out to an early two sets to none lead at the UBC Okanagan gymnasium. However, a few important changes by UBC Okanagan head coach Steve Manuel proved extremely effective for the Heat, as they would go on to win the final three sets in dramatic fashion to squeak out a victory 3-2.

After inserting Brianna Beamish into the lineup at 1-3 in the second set, and from then on Beamish would take over. She finished the game with 14 kills on 46 attempts, many of which came at crucial junctures throughout the match. She also added 14 digs behind one of the best games in her young career. Jill Festival would also provide 10 kills on 23 attempts for a strong .348 kill percentage in extended playing time.

A balanced Dinos attack behind 15 kills from Lindsay Dolan, 14 kills from Courtney Dawson, and 12 kills from Andrea Price just simply wasn't enough in a night where the stat sheet should have pointed to a Dino victory. A dismal .141 team hitting percentage in the final three sets proved to be the difference maker after a strong opening two sets from the Dinos.

The win, the third in the row for the Heat, hit double digits in the win column as their record improves to 10-5; meanwhile Calgary falls below .500 slipping to 7-8.

Both teams will meet again tomorrow at UBC Okanagan as the Heat go for the sweep and Calgary look for the equalizer in what should be another exciting matchup. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
