CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby squad put up the biggest win in program history Saturday, defeating the Lethbridge Pronghorns 31-18 at the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club.
The loss was the first by the Pronghorns in Canada West regular season play since Sept. 28, 2008 when the Alberta Pandas were victorious 9-5. The Dinos move into sole possession of first place in the Canada West standings at 3-0, while Lethbridge falls to 2-1. Heading into the game, the Dinos were ranked No. 7 in the nation while the Pronghorns had the No. 3 ranking nationally.
After the Pronghorns went up 5-0 early on a try by Paula Woynarowsky, the Dinos were able to punch it in three straight times to make it a 17-5 lead for the home side as
Kelcey Leavitt,
Brynna Walker, and
Ellen McGregor each scored.
Walker would add another try midway through the second half, with
Amanda Williams rounding out the scoring late for the Dinos. Lethbridge responded with tries by Cassandra Orr and Brandi Van Eeuwen, along with a penalty goal by Laura Murphy-Burke.
Kate Scotland converted two tries for Calgary, while the Horns were unable to convert any of their scores.
Through three games apiece, Leavitt and Woynarowsky sit tied for the conference lead with five tries apiece, while Scotland added two more converts to bring her season total to 16.
Calgary wraps up the 2012 regular season Oct. 12 when they host the Alberta Pandas, who will then travel to Lethbridge for a season-ending tilt Oct. 14. The Pandas host the Canada West championship tournament Oct. 19-21.
