VANCOUVER – Two Calgary tries in the first 16 minutes of play was enough for the Dinos to leave Vancouver with a victory over the host UBC Thunderbirds in the Canada West women's rugby opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.
A second-half explosion by the No. 10 team in the country pushed the final score to 76-10.
Samantha Crandell opened the scoring at the seven-minute mark as the tighthead prop powered her way over the try line close to the sticks.
Kate Scotland made the first of her eight conversions in the game to make it 7-0 for the visitors. Crandell would finish the match with two scores.
The Dinos recorded their second try in the 16th minute. After holding the ball for five phases of play, Calgary ran UBC out of defenders and
Leah Conforti was able to cross the try line untouched. A missed convert put the score at 12-0.
UBC replied just six minutes after that as Haley Glendinning (Kamloops, BC) dragged four defenders into the in-goal area to get the T-Birds on the scoreboard. A Catherine Ohler (Calgary, AB) conversion cut the Calgary lead to 12-7.
That was as close as UBC would get. A few minutes later, the Thunderbirds pushed the ball deep into Dinos' territory but could not score. Calgary got the ball back and after a quick free kick, they needed just two phases to cover the length of the field and record a backbreaking try.
Brynna Walker had the honour of scoring for Calgary, now ahead 17-7.
Three minutes later,
Katherine Procyshyn tallied the first of her three tries today to make it 24-7.
In the 37th minute, Ohler added a penalty goal for UBC, who also stopped Calgary from scoring on the last play of the first half to keep the score 24-10 at the break.
UBC did not gain momentum from that goal line stand and instead, Calgary was able to put the game out of reach with eight second-half tries.
Kelcey Leavitt scored twice while
Janai Haupapa,
Amanda Williams and
Ellen McGregor also got tries for Calgary.
UBC will have little time to rest after the season-opening loss. The Thunderbirds will host No. 3 Lethbridge at Wolfson Field on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Calgary (1-0) will travel to Victoria for a Sunday afternoon game.
Lethbridge defeated Victoria 49-5 on Friday.
