Dinos announce nominees for 2011-12 major awards

CALGARY – With just one week to go until the University of Calgary's annual athletics awards celebration, the Dinos announced Tuesday the nominees for major awards for the 2011-12 varsity season.

The hardware will be handed out at the 45th Annual Night of the Dino awards gala Tuesday, April 3. For the first time, the Night of the Dino gala will be held in the Jack Simpson Gym on the University of Calgary campus.

The selection committee chose five male and five female winners of the Award of Merit along with three of each for the Freshman Award of Merit. The Award of Merit winners are nominees for the Dr. Dennis Kadatz Athlete of the Year honours, while the Freshman Award of Merit honourees comprise the candidates for the Bill Popplewell Rookie of the Year Awards.

The athlete of the year awards are named after Dr. Dennis Kadatz, the first football coach and first athletic director at the University of Calgary.

Jenna Kaye (basketball), Kaitlyn Longworth (field hockey), Rachael McIntosh (track and field), Erica Wiebe (wrestling), and Hayley Wickenheiser (hockey) are the female Athlete of the Year nominees.

The male Award of Merit winners are Tyler Fidler (basketball), Sam Hurl (football), Steven Lumbala (football), Gleb Suvorov (swimming), and Graham Vigrass (volleyball).

The rookie of the year awards are named after Mr. Bill Popplewell, a longtime supporter of the Dinos during his time with Husky Energy – one of the Dinos' longest-standing corporate partners.

The female rookie of the year nominees are Amanda Reason (swimming), Erika Romanow (basketball), and Stephanie Zvonkovic (hockey). Andrew Makosiej (swimming), Sean McEwen (football), and Teigan Zahn (hockey) will battle for the male rookie of the year award.

Other awards to be handed out at the Night of the Dino include the Dr. Lou Goodwin and Marg Southern service awards, the Murray Fraser volunteer awards, the Calgary Booster Club Scholar-Athlete awards, the Medwest Athletic Therapy scholarships, and the Gauntlet Extra Effort awards. The Dinos will also unveil a brand new award at the event.

The 45th Annual Night of the Dino gets underway with dinner at 6:30 p.m., followed immediately by the awards show which will culminate with the announcement of the Dr. Dennis Kadatz Athletes of the Year at approximately 9 p.m.
