Spartans await Dinos to open postseason

| By:
CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos open up the playoffs this weekend in Langley, B.C. where they will play a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal match-up against the No. 3-ranked Trinity Western Spartans.

Calgary closed out the regular season on Saturday with a straight-sets victory in Regina to give themselves a final record of 11-9. Trinity Western claimed the fourth-seed in the conference standings with a 13-7 mark after splitting two matches with the UBC Thunderbirds on the weekend.

These two teams will be familiar with each other after squaring off at the Jack Simpson Gym on Feb. 3-4 when the Dinos swept the then-No. 2 Spartans. The Friday night saw Calgary drop the first set only to come back and take the game in four (18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12). With Seniors' Night on the Saturday, the duo of Sarah Lacny and Melanie Miazga made sure their final showing at the Jack was memorable as they were key in a second consecutive 3-1 win (25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 27-25).

Calgary and Trinity Western last met in a postseason series back in 2005. While hosting the series, the Dinos were able to win in two straight, leading on to a bronze medal at the national tournament. Calgary will be hoping for a similar result when they take the floor in Langley. Last season, the Dinos were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round after falling on back-to-back nights to the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton. Playing on the road may be Calgary's most difficult challenge to handle after going 2-8 away from home, while posting a 9-1 mark in front of the home crowd.

This series will begin on Thursday and go until Saturday if necessary. The winner moves on to the Canada West Final Four the following weej at UBC's War Memorial Gym. The top three teams from that event will earn a berth in the CIS championship March 2-4 at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.
