REGINA – The University of Calgary's women's volleyball team salvaged a weekend split with a three-set victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Calgary opened up with a convincing 25-12 first-set victory, then outlasted the Cougars by a 25-23 margin in the second and put the match away with a 25-19 win in the third.
No one broke into double-digit kills for the Dinos, but Calgary's balanced attack saw four players put down at least seven.
Sarah Moncks led the way with nine kills, while
Andrea Price and
Melanie Miazga both had eight kills and
Lindsey Doland added seven.
Ali Sandholm led all players with five blocks, with
Brooke Halvorsen tying for the match high with 10 digs.
Second-year right side Chelsea Ziolkowski led Regina with 10 kills, while Meagan Onstad had seven kills and 10 digs. Rebecca Rink tied for the match lead with 10 digs and had no reception errors on 36 serve receives. Onstad, Rink, Tiffany Herman, and Solveig Nilson all played their final matches as Cougars, with all four players leaving significant marks on the school's record book.
Calgary (11-9) finishes in a tie with Manitoba for fifth place in the conference, but claim the tiebreaker over the Bisons based on sets won/lost differential. The Dinos will travel to Langley, B.C. next weekend to square off with Trinity Western in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series.
The Cougars (5-15) finish the season in 10th place in the conference standings.
