REGINA – Back in the old gymnasium for the first time in nearly eight years, the University of Regina's women's volleyball team turned back the clock with a four-set victory over the No. 9-ranked Calgary Dinos on Friday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport's Gym 1.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the first set after registering six consecutive points with Michelle Sweeting serving and fended off a late Calgary charge to take the first set by a 25-22 margin. The second set went the visitors' way, as the Dinos seized control with a 10-1 run leading up to the media timeout and cruised to a 25-19 victory to even the match at one apiece.
The third set was the exact opposite of the second, as this time it was Regina's turn to put together a run going into the media timeout. The Cougars won 10 out of 13 points to turn a two-point deficit into a five-point lead and essentially traded points with Calgary from there, ending up with a 25-22 win to go up 2-1.
Fourth-year outside hitter Roxanne Olynyk, who had a combined three kills in the first two sets before heating up for four in the third, simply took over the fourth set for Regina. Olynyk had nine kills in the fourth set alone to power the Cougars to a match-clinching 25-21 victory, giving the U of R its fifth Canada West win of the season.
Meagan Onstad ended up with a match-high 19 kills for the Cougars, added 13 digs to record one of the team's two double-doubles, and also led all players with three service aces. Olynyk ended up with 16 kills and added 14 digs, while fifth-year libero Rebecca Rink had a match-leading 19 digs. Tiffany Herman had 44 assists for Regina (5-14).
Calgary's
Andrea Price had 11 kills and tied setter
Sarah Lacny for the team lead with 12 digs. Lacny ended up with 28 assists. The Dinos (10-9) drop into a tie for fifth place with Manitoba after the Bisons scored a four-set win over Saskatchewan on Friday night.
Calgary and Regina will be back in the main gym at the CKHS on Saturday night. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT following the conclusion of the men's match. The match will be broadcast live on CanadaWest.tv.
