CALGARY – For the second straight year, the University of Calgary Dinos make up the majority of a Canada West all-star roster that will face the top junior hockey players in Canada Thursday afternoon.
The Dinos, along with players from the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and Mount Royal University Cougars, will play the national junior team selection camp Thursday, Dec. 13. The puck drop goes at noon MT at the Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park.
Team Canada's selection camp for the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship runs through Saturday. Tickets for selection camp games are available at the door for $5, which goes to the Hockey Canada Foundation; by showing a Club Hockey Canada card; or by donating a non-perishable food item.
The game will be the third and final contest in the national junior team selection camp. Team Canada will play a red-white scrimmage at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a game against the University of Alberta Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
The Canada West roster includes 19 players including 10 Dinos, five Mount Royal Cougars, and two Lethbridge Pronghorns. In addition, longtime pro Mark Bomersback of Rochester, Alta. – who most recently played with Lukko in the top pro league in Finland – along with former Los Angeles Kings draft pick T.J. Fast will join the Canada West squad.
Mount Royal's Eric Galbraith sits seventh in Canada West scoring at the halfway point of the 2012-13 varsity season with 18 points, followed closely by Calgary's
Walker Wintoneak (16) and Lethbridge's Chase Schaber (15). The team will be coached by the Dinos'
Mark Howell.
It's not the first time the Dinos and Horns have merged to play Canada at the world junior camp. In December 2006, the Canada West squad defeated Canada 5-4 at Father David Bauer Arena – handing the national team its only loss that year. Canada went on to capture the gold medal in Leksand, Sweden. In 2011, Canada defeated the joint Calgary-Lethbridge entry 7-4 en route to a bronze medal performance at the world junior championship co-hosted by Calgary and Edmonton.
As in previous years, Team Canada goaltenders will play for both teams in an effort to give the coaching staff its best opportunity to see all players in action.
