BOX SCORE WINNIPEG – The No. 5 University of Manitoba Bisons completed a home sweep of the tenth-ranked University of Calgary Dinos with a 3-2 win (25-27, 25-17, 25-17, 14-25, 15-9) in CIS women's volleyball action Friday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
The last time Manitoba swept Calgary at home was back in late November 2007.
The game came down to a fifth and deciding set. Manitoba took an early 4-3 lead and never looked back, winning the set 15-9. The Bisons were led in the final set by player of the game Rachel Cockrell, who had four kills in the final frame.
Calgary started the game by winning a tightly contested first set, despite trailing Manitoba 8-2 early. The Bisons charged back, winning the second and third sets by identical scores of 25-17.
With the score 8-8 in the fourth, the Dinos took control of the set by ripping off eight consecutive points. The rally was led by Calgary's second year middle
Courtney Dawson, who scored three service aces in the stretch. The Dinos would ride that stretch into a set win, setting up the final and deciding set.
Manitoba remains undefeated at 3-0 with the win while Calgary slides to 1-3.
The next action for the Bisons is on the road against the Brandon Bobcats on Friday, Nov. 9. The Dinos' next game is on the following day as they host the Winnipeg Wesmen at Calgary's Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
