Bisons grab series opener

BOX SCORE WINNIPEG – The No. 5 University of Manitoba Bisons women's volleyball team won their second consecutive conference regular season match Thursday night against the No. 10 University of Calgary Dinos 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-13, 25-23).
 
Manitoba won an intense back-and-forth battle in the fourth giving them the match.
 
Calgary started the fourth in the lead until two in a row for the Bisons' Danika Picklyk tied the set 16-16. The Bisons pulled ahead only to have the Dinos catch them at 20-20 and grab a kill to make the score 21-20 for the Dino. Left/right side player Rachel Cockrell of the Bisons tied it back up at 22-22 with a glaring kill. Tied again at 23-23 until Cockrell scored two in a row for to win the match.  
 
Cockrell pulled the Bisons through putting up a whopping 19 kills for the team and a game-high.
 
Middle player Emily Erickson came in second for the Bisons with seven kills. Erickson played incredible defense fiercely blocking the ball as she recorded a total five blocks in the match. Erickson's strong arm pulled out an incredible three service aces in the middle of the third (four overall) to maintain the Bisons' lead.  
 
The Dinos players Sarah Moncks, Lindsey Doland and Courtney Dawson fought hard throwing down 14, 11, and 12 kills respectively.
 
This game was the first time Manitoba has beaten Calgary at home since February 2011.
 
Last year the Bisons finished sixth in the Canada West Conference and the Dinos finished fifth.
 
Both teams meet again on Friday, November 2 with first serve at 5 p.m. MT at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of Manitoba campus).
