Dinos earn split in Cougars' home opener

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos avenged their five set loss from a night prior, downing the Mount Royal University Cougars in similar fashion, winning a thrilling five set match (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25 and 15-5) Saturday night at MRU's Kenyon Court.

Connor Frehlich led the Dinos for the second straight night, racking up 14 kills after posting 13 a night prior, while Colton deMan was the clubhouse leader for the Cougars with 16 of his own.

The win improves Calgary to 1-1 on the year, while the Cougars fall to the same 1-1 mark.

In a match that was good to the end – this time it would be the Dinos who'd outlast the Cougars in a decisive fifth set.

After Calgary jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, the Cougars would battle back in the second frame, as a Calgary service error would seal the set as Mount Royal responded with a 25-20 win.

In a well-played third, the Dinos would rally from a 16-13 deficit capitalizing on a number of Cougars' hitting errors, grabbing their first set lead at 19-18. Riding the momentum, Alex Cook would notch one of eight Dinos service aces on the night as Calgary stole the third set 25-22.

Tied throughout the majority of the fourth, the Cougars would start to pull away at 24-21. A resilient Calgary squad would continue to battle, forcing the score to 24-23 – before MRU setter Josh Kirkham would take matters into his own hand, laying down a beautiful tip that would tie the match at two games apiece.

The Dinos would come out firing in the fifth, as Connor Frehlich pounded home the opening kill. Tied at 1-1 Calgary would rattle off seven of the next eight points to lead 8-2.

A stuff block at 14-5 would end the night, as the Dinos walked away with the weekend split.

Greg Mann (8 kills) and Ivan Kartev (7 kills) would round out the Dinos offence, while Grigor Kartev was the only other Cougar in double-digit kills in the match hammering down 10 winners.

On the night, the Dinos would lead in most major statistical categories including service aces (8-3), digs (43-41) and blocks (16-5).

Mount Royal heads on their first road trip of the season, heading east to play the Winnipeg Wesmen on Nov.2-3 while Calgary also heads to Winnipeg to play the Manitoba Bisons on Nov.1-2.
