Bisons best the Dinos

| By:

WINNIPEG - The #4 Manitoba Bisons women's volleyball team picked up its tenth win of the year with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-23) win over the #6 Calgary Dinos at the Investors Group Athletic Center on Friday night.

BOX SCORE

The Bisons led for most of the contest, with Calgary only able to hold a late lead in the third set. Tricia Mayba led the way for the Bisons with 11 kills, while Kate Wasyliw and Ashley Voth each had nine kills. Setter Sam Loewen picked up 37 assists in the game as well.

Bisons head coach Ken Bentley said the win was a result of the work the Bisons put into preparing for the Dinos. “We were really steady on our side and we saw consistency in every area tonight,” he said. “We've been working hard this season to see this point.”

Voth may have led the Bisons in kills in the first set with five, but it was Mayba that may have picked up the momentum swinging point for the Herd in the set. With the score 18-17 Bisons shortly after the second technical timeout, Mayba made two diving digs on opposite sides of the court to keep the rally going, then put it away with one of her four kills in the set. The point gave the Bisons a two-point edge, one they would carry and extend to a 25-20 win in the first set.

The Bisons momentum would continue into the second set as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead at the first technical timeout. Calgary would come back however, closing the lead to 9-7 before the Bisons would go on a run of their own, taking a 16-7 lead into the second technical timeout. Calgary would slowly chip away at the lead, but would run out of points as the Bisons took set number two by a score of 25-18.

Once again the Bisons would lead at the first technical in the third set, this time by a score of 8-4. But things would be a little different in this set, as Calgary would tie the game at nine before taking a slim 16-15 lead at the second technical. After Bentley's final timeout, the Bisons would tie the game at 23, forcing Calgary to take its own timeout to regroup. This game wouldn't go to a fourth set however, as Mayba would end it for the Bisons with her team-leading eleventh kill, giving her team a 25-23 win in the set, and the 3-0 sweep of the match.

Melanie Miazga led Calgary and the match with 13 kills, while team mate Sarah Moncks would chip in with 10 kills of her own. Brooke Halvorsen would add 12 digs in a losing cause for the Dinos as well.

The Bisons (10-5) don't have much time to enjoy the win, as they square off with Calgary (8-7) in a rematch on February 5th at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CT.
