Dinos battle but drop five-setter to Winnipeg

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the Calgary Dinos with a dramatic 3-2 (25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 15-12) victory Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen came into the two match series ranked number nine in the country, beat Calgary in straight sets Thursday night.

Winnipeg came out strong winning the opening two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-16. Calgary mounted a comeback winning the third set 25-21 and continued to put the pressure on the Wesmen winning the fourth set 25-22. In the fifth set Calgary carried their momentum to build a 8-4 lead as the teams traded benches. The Wesmen reeled off four straight points to tie the score at 8-8. After an exchange of points to knot the score at 9-9, Winnipeg went on the attack once again scoring three straight points to hold a 12-9 lead late in the set. Calgary fought back to close the gap to 12-11 but a pair of kills by Ozana Nikolic and one by Lauren Sears closed out the fifth set 15-12 in Winnipeg's favor.

First year left side Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with a match high 21 kills. Lauren Sears had 13 kills and seven service aces, one off from tying the Wesmen Women's Volleyball team record for most aces in a match. Nan Callander holds the record with eight that she accomplished three times. Libero Tesca Andrew-Wasylik led the Wesmen with a match high 24 kills. Setter Brittany Habing had 54 assists.

Andrea Price led Calgary with 18 kills and 18 defensive digs. Lindsey Doland had 15 kills to go along with 13 digs. Setter Sarah Lacny had 49 assists.

Winnipeg improves their record to 5-1 and will be on the road next Friday and Saturday in Edmonton against the Alberta Pandas. Calgary now 2-4 will host the Brandon Bobcats for a two match series.
