Volleyball Dinos drop Wesmen

WINNIPEG - The number four-ranked Calgary Dinos opened a two match set in Winnipeg with a hard fought 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 13-25, 25-23) victory over the Wesmen Thursday evening at the Duckworth Centre.

The two Canada West Conference rivals came out battling in the opening set both hitting above the .300 mark for the set. There were only seven attacking errors between the teams in the first set with Calgary taking the opening set 25-22. The second set was another close affair with the Wesmen clinging to a 16-15 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg built a lead to 20-17 but Calgary came back late in the set winning by an identical score of 25-22.

In the third set the two teams battled to 8-8 when the Wesmen went wild scoring eight of nine points to hold a 16-9 lead at the timeout. Winnipeg got back into the match with a convincing 25-13 win in set number three. The fourth set was another battle with both teams fighting and clawing for every point. Calgary put the match away winning the fourth set by a score of 25-23.

Fifth year right side Allen Meek led the Dinos with a match high 22 kill. Chris Hoag had 10 kills to go along with 10 defensive digs. Trent Monagle finished with four blocks.

Third year outside Matthew Stubler led the Wesmen with 14 kills and 11 defensive digs.Second year middle Brendan Black had a strong match at the net with five blocks.

The victory improves Calgary's record to 2-3, Winnipeg drops to 1-4.

The two teams will do battle on Friday night to wrap up the two match series. Match time is 5:00 p.m. MT.
