Moncks powers Dinos to season-opening win

| By:
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Newly-minted Dinos head coach Natalie Schwartz got the first regular season win of her CIS career in her first try as the University of Calgary opened the 2011-12 season with a 3-1 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack Friday night (25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-15).

BOX SCORE

Led by a career night from Sarah Moncks, who banged 11 kills without a single error from her spot on the left side, the Dinos built up a lead after the first two sets and put an exclamation point on the victory with at 25-15 win in the fourth.

“I thought we came together when we needed to make digs and put balls away,” said Schwartz.” Our middles had really big nights, Mel (Miazga) was stellar, we kept them off-balance, and our outside hitters were rock-solid. Overall, it was a really great night for us.”

Calgary was led by Lindsey Donald who had 12 kills in 21 chances with 19 digs. Moncks had 11 kills in 33 chances with ten digs, two service aces, one solo block and three block assists while Melanie Miazga had ten kills in 20 chances with one solo block and eight block assists.

For TRU, Kelly Asleson wound up with 12 kills in 27 chances with seven digs. Katarina Osadchuk had seven kills in 15 opportunities, while Amanda Frayne had seven kills in 21 chances. Kara Twomey had 31 assists with Sara Pettersson had 19 digs.

“I thought when we took care of first contact, it made us successful,” said Schwartz. “TRU kept changing things up on us offensively, even from what we had prepared going in. They challenged us defensively to make some adjustments.”

The two teams meet again Saturday night at the Tournament Capital Centre, with first serve slated for 6 p.m. MT, live on CanadaWest.tv.
