Dinos close season even at 10-10

WINNIPEG - The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the Uniersity of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The match marked the end of the regular season schedule for both teams. Calgary finishes the season with an even 10-10 record. The vastly improved Wesmen squad finish with a record of 7-13.

Lindsey Doland led Calgary with a match high 16 kills and four blocks. Ali Sandholm and Laura Spence finished with 11 kills each. Raynell Lavertu led the Dinos with 17 digs.

Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 12 kills. Lauren Sears added 11 kills, two blocks and two service aces. Alix Krahn finished with 10 kills. Carleen Kruschel led the team with 16 digs.

Calgary carried the play in the first half of the opening set building an 8-4 lead at the first timeout and settling in with a 16-13 lead at the second break. Winnipeg responded with a 6-1 run to take a 19-17 lead late in the set. The teams exchanged points to 24-24, until Calgary closed out the first set with a kill by Lavertu, followed by a Wesmen attack error to take the first set 26-24.

Winnipeg was able to regroup in set number two holding leads of 8-5 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Calgary battled back to tie the score at 22-22 and closed out the set with three straight points to win the second set 25-22.

In the third set Winnipeg found their game, leading 8-4 and 16-12 at the set breaks and eventually went on to win the third set 25-23. Winnipeg had an attack percentage of .316 in the third set.

The Dinos were able to refocus for the fourth set leading 8-3 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg fought back and cut the Calgary lead to 23-22 late in the set. Lindsay Russell came thru with a kill to set up match point at 24-22, but a Calgary service error gave the Wesmen life trailing 24-23. A Wesmen attack error ended the fourth set in Calgary's favor 25-23.

Calgary will return to Winnipeg next weekend to face the second place Manitoba Bisons in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series as they begin down the road to the CIS championship.
