| By:
WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen played one of their best matches of the season. The Wesmen defeated the number six ranked Calgary Dinos 3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

BOX SCORE

The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 7-12. Calgary falls below .500 with a record of 9-10.

"Without question, this was our worst defensive performance of the season," said a frustrated Dinos coach Jesse Knight, whose team can finish no better and no worse than seventh place and will return to Winnipeg next weekend to face the second-place Manitoba Bisons in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series.

Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen attack with a match high 16 kills and three service aces. Ariel Smith added 12 kills and 10 defensive digs. Alix Krahn and Lauren Sears each finished with 11 kills. Sears led the team with three blocks. Setter Danica Hughes had 44 assists.

Raynell Lavertu led Calgary with 13 kills, 14 defensive digs and three blocks. Laura Spence finished with nine kills. Setter Sarah Lacny finished the match with 30 assists.

Winnipeg jumped out to a 8-5 lead at the first technical of the first set only to see that lead disappear in a hurry. Calgary rattled off seven unanswered points to take a 12-8 lead and extended their lead to 16-11 at the second break. Calgary continued to dominate the opening set and eventually won the first set by a score of 25-13. Calgary had an attack percentage of .500 in the opening set.

The Wesmen regrouped in the second set holding a slim 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout before going on a 6-1 run to extend their lead to 14-7. A big kill by Sonia Rossy gave the Wesmen a 16-12 lead at the second break. Winnipeg evened the match winning the second set 25-19.

In the third set, the Wesmen carried their momentum to build leads of 8-4 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. Calgary could only cut the Wesmen lead to as little as five points late in the set with the Wesmen winning the third set 25-19.

Winnipeg's strong play continued in set number four as the Wesmen carried the play to leads of 8-7 and 16-11 at the set breaks. Winnipeg closed out the match winning the fourth set 25-18.

The two teams will meet in the final regular season match for both teams Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
