Dinos rebound to drop Wesmen

| By:
CALGARY – It was a bounce-back performance for the University of Calgary Dinos, who earned a split of their weekend women's volleyball series with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-12, 22-25, 25-20) win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.

BOX SCORE

After dropping Friday's opener in five sets when they seemed to have the match in hand, the Dinos responded with a solid effort across the board, coming back from a seven-point deficit in the first set to win 25-22, then dominating the second 25-12.

Disappointed Friday night, Dinos head coach Jesse Knight was obviously more pleased with Saturday's effort.

“Our ability to fight back in that set was the story, it set the tone for the rest of the match,” Knight said. “Brooke Halvorsen was fantastic in the backcourt tonight both passing and defensively, making it very difficult for Winnipeg to score. And Lindsay Russell was huge down the stretch in the three sets we won.”

Halvorsen, a libero who transferred to the Dinos from Simon Fraser this season, led all players with 17 digs on the night.

Russell had the majority of the offensive volume for Calgary, connecting for 16 kills on 41 attempts for the Dinos in the four-set contest. Carleen Kruschel led the way for the Wesmen once again, recording 12 kills on 43 attempts.

After pulling off the come-from-behind win in the first set, Calgary absolutely dominated the second, holding the Wesmen to just six kills against 11 attack errors. The third set featured poor volleyball by both sides, with Winnipeg hitting just eight percent against 6.7 percent for the Dinos to force a fourth. Again, the Dinos performed will in the fourth, recording 19 kills in the set to take the 25-20 win.

Melanie Miazga added 13 kills offensively for the Dinos, while Maura Hayes, Sarah Moncks, and Laura Wilson chipped in with six apiece. Sonia Rossy and Lauren Sears posted nine kills each for the Wesmen behind Kruschel's dozen.

The Dinos improve to 1-1 on the young 2010-11 season and will head to Saskatoon next weekend for a date with the Saskatchewan Huskies. The Wesmen also head east, returning home to host the three-time defending CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds at the Duckworth Centre.
