SASKATOON - Earning their first victory of the season, the University of Saskatchewan Huskie women's volleyball team polished off the visiting No. 6 ranked University of Calgary Dinos 3-0: 25-19, 25-22, 25-18 Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

With the win the Huskies improve to 1-3 on the young Canada West women's volleyball season, while the Dinos move to 2-2 on the season. It was the first time since 2002 that the Huskies have defeated Calgary. The two teams split the weekend. A night earlier the Dinos won 3-1: 25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19
Back-and-forth throughout the first set, the Huskies began to break away at the 11 point mark. Tied at 11 after a Calgary service error, Katie Graves opened six straight serves with an ace that couldn't be dug up by the Dinos. After the run, Saskatchewan led 16-12 and the Dinos couldn't find a way to get back in the set. A Calgary attack attempt that landed out-of-bounds ended the set 25-19.
With momentum, Saskatchewan jumped out in front 4-0 to start the second set forcing Calgary to take an early timeout. A kill by
Lindsey Doland made the game 4-1 but a service error gave the ball right back to the Huskies. Graves once again led the Huskies on serves and Candace Hueser chipped in three kills to put the Huskies up 10-1. Calgary was able to get within two at 17-15 and continued to keep the game tight but the early Huskies lead was too much to overcome, losing 25-22.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the third set until the 10th point. From there, Saskatchewan took over the set scoring the next four points. Once again, Calgary pulled back within two at 17-15 but when Erin Foster was given the ball, she found herself with an ace and then led the team to a 21-16 lead. A kill by Kira Zeeben and a Dino attack that landed out of bounds gave the Huskies the 25-18 win.
Melanie Miazga led the Dinos with nine kills on the night, while
Laura Wilson added seven.
Maura Hayes had 14 digs. Hueser had 16 kills for the Huskies, followed by 10 by Graves. Graves also added a match-high 16 digs.
The Huskies hit the road to face the University of Winnipeg Wesmen next weekend, while the Dinos travel to face the Brandon University Bobcats.
