SASKATOON - Overcoming large deficits early in each of the four sets, the University of Calgary Dinos found themselves with a 3-1: 25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

In all four sets, the Huskies jumped out to large leads including 5-1 in the second, 4-1 in the third and 5-0 in the fourth. Calgary responded with strong play from their middle blockers and outside hitters to get back in the sets.
The score bounced back-and-forth between the two teams for the majority of the first and second sets, after Calgary rebounded from being down early. At the end of the first set, the Huskies held Calgary to 23 points for five possessions before
Sam Fraser and
Lindsay Russell led the Dinos to the 25-23 victory. The second set mimicked the first, this time with second-year outsider hitter Candace Hueser winning it 25-23 for the Huskies.
Even though Saskatchewan jumped out to the early 4-1 lead in the third set, Calgary was able to rebound on the strength of five
Melanie Miazga kills in the frame. The Dinos took over the lead after the eighth point and held Saskatchewan to just 14 points in the 25-14 win.
Once again the Huskies jumped out to the early lead in the fourth set but Calgary was able to claw back in the game tying the set at 15 points. Although the Huskies scored the 16th point, Calgary took over with kills by
Lindsey Doland and went on to win the set 25-19 and the match.
With the win the No. 8 ranked Calgary improves to 2-1 on the early Canada West women's volleyball season, while the Huskies drop to 0-3.
Miazga led the Dinos with 14 kills on the night,
Maura Hayes chipped in an extra 11.
Laura Wilson had five service aces on the night and Hayes had four.
Hueser led the Huskies with 11 kills, while Katie Graves followed closely behind with 10. Middle blockers Kira Zeeben and Laura Beadle each had three block stuffs.
The two teams will battle again Saturday night at the PAC. Match time is set for 5 p.m. MT.
