CALGARY – An entertaining five-set victory by the Brigham Young University Cougars over the host Calgary Dinos capped off a long day of volleyball in the Jack Simpson Gym Friday as the 2010 Husky Dino Cup rolled on.

The result left the very real possibility of a three-way tie at 2-1 atop the standings between the Cougars, Dinos, and the Alberta Golden Bears, which would lead to all kinds of tiebreaking math and set calculators in motion. The 3-2 win (20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 20-18) evened BYU's record at 1-2 as they face the 0-2 Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday morning in the final round robin game.
The Golden Bears, who came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Cougars in the first match of the day, had little trouble with the Huskies in dispatching them 3-0 later in the evening. The result guaranteed Alberta a spot in Saturday night's final (7 p.m., Jack Simpson Gym) where they will face either the Dinos or the Cougars.
It all comes down to the early match-up between the Cougars and Huskies to determine the Bears' opponent. A Saskatchewan win would guarantee the Dinos a spot in the final, as would a five-set BYU win due to the tiebreaking rules (sets won/lost overall). A three-set victory by the Cougars would give them the other spot in the final.
The math gets tricky if BYU wins in four sets. In that case, they would end up tied with the Dinos with an 8-6 sets won-lost record, and the tiebreaker would then go to a points differential.
The bronze medal match at the tournament goes Saturday at 3 p.m., where the Huskies will face either the Cougars or the Dinos. A women's match between Calgary and Alberta will follow at 5 p.m., with the tournament championship game slated for 7 p.m. as the Golden Bears look for their first Husky Dino Cup title.
