VICTORIA – The UVic Vikes women's rugby team notched the season's first win against the Calgary Dinos, 32-22, Friday afternoon in honour of the late Dinos head coach Jenny Vincent, who founded the Vikes program as well.
The Dinos opened the scoring in the fifth minute as
Brynna Walker ran in for a try, making some history by scoring the Dinos' first-ever CIS points.
Sylvie Mullen added the conversion. The balance of the Dinos scoring came with tries from
Samantha Crandell, Kimberly Gould, and
Kayla Nelson.
The Vikes got on the board in the tenth minute as second year Abby Goodwin scored a try and Vikes lock Randi Hunter kicked the conversion. The rest of UVic's tries came by Chelsey Minter (2) and Cassy Stevens. Hunter made a total of three conversions and two penalty goals to round out the scoring.
The Friday afternoon memorial match was in honour of the late Jenny Vincent, founder of UVic women's rugby team and the Dinos head coach when she passed away last January after a brief bout with cancer.
The Dinos wrap up their two-game Pacific coast swing with a visit to Vancouver and the UBC Thunderbirds Sunday afternoon.
