SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies handed the No. 3 ranked University of Calgary Dinos their first loss of the 2009-10 season with an 86-67 victory Friday night in the PAC in Saskatoon.
Calgary falls to 6-1 with the loss, while the Huskies, who fell out of the CIS Top 10 rankings this week after two tough road losses in B.C., move to 3-2. It is the first win for the Huskies over the Dinos in four games.
Calgary shot just 33.3% in the first half and finished the game at 37.7%. Saskatchewan found the basket more consistent in the game shooting at 41.3%. The Huskies scored 26 points off Calgary turnovers and had 14 points on the second chance.
Matched evenly to start the game, the Huskies and Dinos battled point for point throughout the beginning of the first quarter. Up 11-10 with two minutes left, the Huskies pulled away going on a 6-1 run over the Dinos courtesy of jump shots by Nolan Brudehl and Clint Unsworth. The Huskies led by as many as seven in the frame. The quarter ended with the Huskies up 21-17.
Calgary scored the first three points in the second quarter to bring the game back within two. But Huskie Showron Glover answered with a three point shot to extend the Huskies lead. The Huskies continued to pour on the offense leading by as many as 15 in the frame.
Robbie Sihota hit two foul shots to end the first half and bring his team to a 12 point deficit at 43-31.
The Huskies continued their strong play throughout the second half and continued to hold onto the lead. Calgary came within four points at 52-48 in the mid part of the third but that was as close as they would get.
Sihota finished with a game high 22 points.
Ross Bekkering had 17 followed by
Jamie McLeod with 10 for the Dinos. Four Saskatchewan players were in double digits in the game –Glover with 19, Michael LInklater with 17, Troy Gottselig with 13 and Brudehl with 11. Gottselig finished with a game high 14 rebounds followed by Sihota with 10.
