KAMLOOPS, B.C. - The sixth-ranked Calgary Dinos clawed back to the .500 mark on the season, evening their record at 4-4 with a 3-1 victory (18-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20) over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack (0-6) Saturday night in Kamloops.

BOX SCORE

“Our gut feeling was whoever would serve and pass the best would come out with the victory,” stated Dinos head coach Jesse Knight. “We had more of a controlled offense going.”

“We did a little less running around than we did on Friday,” said WolfPack head coach Cal Wohlford. “But I also thought we had a little less hustle and had a lack of going for defensive balls. There were times that it looked like we were digging the ball really good and then it appeared we weren't getting the easy balls It looked like we were beat.”

TRU started out well in the first set as they got some key kills from Anna Dyakiewicz. Dyakiewicz wound up with 15 kills in 41 attempts and had 11 digs.

“We did start off well,” stated Wohford  “ I thought if we could have kept the pressure on Calgary  we could have come out with a better result. But we folded. We did better than they did in first two sets but aftertaht, we did worse. We need to stay aggressive all the time.”

Knight praised veteran middle Laura Spence.

"Her big key was that she had balance," he said. "She scored behind the setter, she scored from in front of the setter. She was all over the court and its tough to defend against her.”

Spence wound up with a team-high 15 kills and two errors in 25 attempts.  Maura Hayes had nine kills, four service aces and a team high 13 digs.

TRU had three players in double figures for kills. Besides Dyakiewicz, Amanda Frayne had 12 kills and 10 digs, while Kelly Asleson had 13 and 16 digs.

“I thought we played really well as a team,” said Asleson as she looked at the weekend.  “Our attack was really spread out. Today, we didn't rise to the occasion and play like the team we could be. We need to figure out to eliminate our own errors.”

The WolfPack will travel to UBC to meet the Thunderbirds next weekend, while the Dinos have the bye next weekend.

“We still have a lot of work to do," said Knight. "We have a young team. The good thing about this weekend is that a lot of players contributed.  We want to build on that.  It's okay that if one player isn't performing well is that others come through and help out.”
