KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The University of Calgary Dinos got back in the win column Friday, eking out a 3-1 victory (28-26, 25-20, 23-25, 27-25) against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.
BOX SCORE
Calgary moves to 3-4 on the season while TRU drops to 0-5.
“Our out-of-system offense, for lack of a better term, was where we won the match,” said Calgary head coach Jesse Knight. “Our scrambly play where we found an opening kept TRU off balance.”
The Dinos had a 24-21 lead in the first set before the WolfPack rattled off four straight points to move ahead by one. After the WolfPack took a 26-25 lead on a kill from Kelly Asleson, Calgary scored three straight points including a kill by
Lindsey Doland. Doland had 14 on the night to pace the Dinos.
“She went in and didn't have a great start,” said Knight. “She had five kills and six errors. But she ended strongly and did everything we asked of her as a young player.”
The second set was also a battle. Calgary was up 9-4 before TRU battled back to cut the margin to 11-9. With the score 17-14, the Dinos scored three straight points to take a 20-14 lead which they would not relinquish. Both teams hit over .400 in that second set, with the Dinos at .464 and the WolfPack at .429.
The third set saw TRU jump to a 10-4 lead and they led 15-8 before Calgary scored eight points in a row to take a 16-15 lead. TRU battled back to take the set 23-25, with two kills by Amanda Frayne helping secure the win. Frayne wound up with 16 kills in the contest.
The fourth was also a see-saw battle. With TRU up 24-22, they couldn't finish it off and allowed Calgary to score five of the last six points to win the match.
Maura Hayes had 11 kills to go with 15 digs for the Dinos, while
Lindsay Russell chipped in with 10 kills and 12 digs. Fifth-year senior
Raynell Lavertu led all Calgary players defensively with 21 digs.
The same two teams go at it again Saturday night at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops.
