EDMONTON - For the second straight night, Tiffany Proudfoot led the No. 5-ranked University of Alberta Pandas to a victory over the fourth-ranked University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday night, this time taking a full five sets to do it (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, and 15-12).
BOX SCORE
The Calgary native improved on last night's outing with a game-high 22 kills, collecting a total of 42 kills in the opening weekend series sweep of the Dinos.
The fourth-year left-side met some competition this evening from sophomore right-side
Lindsey Doland of the Dinos, who had already made six kills in the opening set before Proudfoot bookended a Caitlin Buckell kill with a couple of her own to finish the set off.
The two squads, who went to five sets in their Canada West Final Four matchup last February, spent the rest of the evening showing the crowd in the U of A's Main Gym just how equally matched they are. Neither team could maintain a four- or five-point lead for very long before the other would roar back and keep the score in what seemed to be an endless tie.
Unsurprisingly, each of the three middle sets had scores of 25-23, allowing six players (three per team) to amass double-digit kill totals over the entire game. Proudfoot, along with fourth-year power Jennifer Restall (15) and fourth-year right-side Meggie Moir (10), combined for 47 of Alberta's 65 kills on the night while Doland (20), rookie left-side
Maura Hayes (14), and senior left
Raynell Lavertu (12) had 46 of Calgary's 64.
Ironically, the Pandas would win the game on an attack error by Doland, who had a game-high ten offensive errors.
Third-year Dino setter
Sarah Lacny led all players with 56 assists while sophomore setter Jaki Ellis led all Pandas with 50.
Alberta remains at home for week two of the new season, hosting the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack, whereas the Dinos will return to their own confines to host the Simon Fraser University Clan.
