Dinos beat Huskies to stay in playoff hunt

| By:

SASKATOON - The University of Calgary Dinos kept pace in the playoff race with a 3-1 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday on a rainy, windy day on Saskatoon's Field 7 in PotashCorp Park.

Earning four points on the weekend – Sunday's win combined with a 0-0 tie with the University of Alberta Golden Bears – the Dinos move to 4-4-2 and just two points out of the fourth and final playoff spot. The Huskies fall to 2-6-2 and sit in seventh place. The Huskies tied the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 1-1 on Saturday.

The Dinos opened the scoring in the 38th minute when a ball from a header by Jeremy Jenkyns found the foot of Devin Delany. Delany was able to quickly beat Huskie keeper Mark Diakiw to put his team up 1-0.

After a Saskatchewan foul on a Dinos rush, Matt Reid was awarded a penalty kick. Reid gave his team a 2-0 lead when he fooled Diakiw with a kick into the left side of the net in the 79th minute.

Saskatchewan was able to cut the lead in half when Jerson Barandica- Hamilton beat Dinos keeper J.P. Crescenzi on a penalty kick into the right side of the net in the 86th minute. But Calgary quickly regained their two point lead when David Bird connected with Joe Long in the 88th minute to solidify the 3-1 win.

Diakiw made four saves for the Huskies, while Crescenzi made one. Calgary out shot the Huskies 14-4 in the match.

The Huskies will hit the road to B.C. to face the UBC Thunderbirds and the Trinity Western University Spartans next weekend, while Calgary will return home to host the University of Fraser Valley Cascades and the University of Victoria Vikes.
