Kevin Boyles named Director of Athletics

CALGARY – After serving one year as interim director, Kevin Boyles has been named the new Director of Athletics at the University of Calgary, effective Jan. 1, 2009.

Boyles, formerly coach of the Dinos women's volleyball program, was named to the interim position in early 2008, and he becomes the fourth full-time athletic director since the Dinos began competition in 1964.

“Kevin has excelled at every level of sport, as an athlete, coach, and program builder,” said Dr. Wayne Giles, Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology, who made the appointment.

“I believe his experience, personality and ability to lead by example make him very effective as the Dinos' Athletic Director and I have every confidence that he will continue the Dinos tradition of excellence.”

“This is a great opportunity for me to continue to impact an organization that I feel really passionately about,” said Boyles. “It's a vote of confidence from Dr. Giles and the University that they have given me the responsibility to move the Dinos forward following some very challenging and difficult times.”

Since taking the job on an interim basis, Boyles has led the Dinos through a period of transition which has resulted in streamlined administrative staffing, increased fiscal responsibility, and a renewed focus on core programs.

A native of Calgary, Boyles has had a long association with his hometown university. A member of the Dinos men's volleyball team from 1985-89 and 1993-94, he was a first- or second-team conference all-star in each of his five seasons. He was a member of the 1989 team that went undefeated en route to the CIAU championship, earning his first of two all-Canadian nods.

Following his varsity career, Boyles played professionally in Germany and spent several years on the national team, representing Canada at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. He played more than 250 international matches wearing the maple leaf.

When his playing career ended, Boyles spent several years as Executive Director of the Alberta Volleyball Association before being hired as coach of the Dinos women's volleyball team in 1999. His hiring began a renaissance for the Dinos, who quickly returned to the top of CIS volleyball.

In just his second year as coach, the team finished 20-2, won the conference championship, and made the first of eight consecutive appearances at the national championship tournament under his guidance.

He accumulated a record of 140-44 (.761) in conference play and a 37-19 (.661) playoff record, winning three Canada West championships and the 2004 CIS national title. His teams won medals in five consecutive national championships, with four straight bronzes following the 2004 gold. He was a two-time Canada West Coach of the Year and the 2005 CIS Coach of the Year.

While coaching the Dinos, Boyles served three consecutive two-year terms as president of the Alberta Volleyball Association.

A graduate of the University of Calgary with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Kinesiology, he was named one of the school's Top 40 Alumni in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary celebrations of 2006. He was also named to the list of the Top 40 Dinos athletes of all time the same year.

Boyles and his wife Kelly reside in northwest Calgary with their two daughters.
