Cougar comeback earns volleyball split

REGINA - The Calgary Dinos and the Regina Cougars went to five sets for the second consecutive night in women's volleyball action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on Saturday, but this time the Cougars were able to win the fifth and deciding set by a 15-11 margin to come away with a 3-2 win over the No. 3-ranked Dinos.

The Cougars started out the match by taking a 25-18 win over Calgary, but back-to-back 25-15 losses put the Dinos up 2-1 after three sets.

Calgary captain and national team player Julie Young sustained a hand injury midway through the third set and was sidelined for the remainder of the match, and the Dinos certainly missed her presence on the floor. Regina extended the match to a fifth set with a 25-17 win in the fourth. In the fifth set, the Cougars scored five of the first six points and were able to hold off the Dinos down the stretch to secure the victory.

The Cougars, who improve to 5-7 with the win, were led by 15 kills from Tammy Jule, who added 10 digs to record one of the team's three double-doubles. Tiffany Herman (38 assists, 10 digs, five block assists) and Lisa Abrahowicz (14 kills, 11 digs) registered Regina's other two.

Solveig Nilson hit for an even .500 percentage after putting up 10 kills with only one error on just 18 total attacks. Beth Clark had a team-high six block assists.

Holly Harper had a team-high 15 kills and added eight digs and seven block assists for Calgary. Laura Spence had eight kills and a match-high eight total blocks, while Raynell Lavertu led all players with 15 digs.

The Dinos suffered just their third loss of the Canada West schedule and now hold a 7-3 conference record. Captain and national team player Julie Young sat out the final two sets after dislocating a fin

While the two teams went to the maximum five sets in both matches during the weekend series, only one of the sets - Regina's 15-11 win in the fifth set of Saturday's match - was decided by less than six points.

Both teams will now take a break from the Canada West action and will return to the conference schedule on Jan. 10 and 11.
