LANGLEY, B.C. – The Trinity Western University men's volleyball team used a fast and dynamic attack with a never say die defense to defeat the No. 4 ranked University of Calgary Dinos 3-1 Saturday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.

The Spartans net play and defense was very strong as TWU limited any attacking options for the Dinos outside hitters on their way to a 25-16, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-17 win. The win moves the unranked Spartans to 3-1 on the season, while the loss drops the Dinos to 3-1.
The Dinos attackers never got going. Andrew Tallas (Red Deer, Alta.) and Allen Meek (Sherwood Park, Alta.) were limited to 0% efficiency as Calgary finished at 8%, while the Spartans Rudy Verhoeff (2nd year, Calgary), Josh Doornenbal (3rd year, Edmonton), Josh Howatson (2nd year, Victoria) and Aaron VandenBrink (3rd year, Langley, B.C.) were dominating finishing with 70%, 58%, 37% and 24% respectively as TWU finished at 30% as a team.
The Spartans took the first two sets 25-16 and 25-21 as they outhit the Dinos 26 to 16 in kills.
Calgary looked to rally in the third set as they started to get things going on their way to a 25-23 win.
The fourth set saw TWU re-establish their attack, 53% to 7% leading 8-4 and 16-11 on their way to an impressive 25-17 victory.
VandenBrink with 14 kills and Doornenbal with 13 kills and five blocks led the Spartans, while Tallas and Meek with eight kills each were tops for the Dinos. TWU's Andrew Hawkes (4th year, Grande Prairie, Alta.) led all players with 11 digs, while Spartans setter Chaim Schalk (5th year, Red Deer, Alta.) was the leader in assists with 44.
The Spartans will now have a bye week before hosting the University of Winnipeg on Nov. 14 and 15. The Dinos also have a bye week next week. They will play again the following week when they will host the University of Manitoba on Nov. 15 and 16.
