| By:

LANGLEY, B.C. – The No. 4 ranked University of Calgary Dinos came into Trinity Western University's David E. Enarson Gym Friday night and took care of business as they swept the Spartans 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-16) to remain undefeated (3-0) and TWU (2-1) their first loss of the season.

BOX SCORE

The Dinos rode an impressive offensive performance featuring just six errors in the match to earn their first win in Langley since Jan. 31, 2003.

The first set was a tight back and forth affair with neither team leading by more than two points throughout the set. The Dinos led 8-7 at the first break and TWU led 16-15 at the second break as both teams used balanced attacks as they battled for control of the set. The Dinos got the two points right when they need them. Back-to-back kills by left side Chris Hoag (Sherbrooke, Que.) and middle Graham Vigrass (Calgary) at 23-23 gave Calgary the opening set 25-23. Left side Marc Howatson (3rd year, Victoria) led the way for the Spartans with five kills on a strong .667 kill percentage, while right side Allen Meek (Sherwood Park, Alta.) led the Dinos with five kills.

In the second set the Dinos asserted themselves and showed why they are considered one of the top teams in the CIS. With set tied at four, and looking as even as the first, the Dinos took advantage of three Spartan errors to go on a 5-0 run to lead 9-4. The Spartans chipped away at the lead and made it close at 13 -10, but the Dinos finished with a 12-6 run to close out the set 25 - 16.

The Dinos continued their dominance in the third set jumping out to 8-2 and 16-10 leads as they cruised to a 25-16 victory.

For the match, Howatson led all Spartans with nine kills. Setter Chaim Schalk (5th year, Red Deer, Alta.) had 23 assists for the Spartans. Left side Andrew Tallas (Red Deer, Alta.) lead the Dinos with nine kills while setter Ciaran McGovern (Grande Prairie, Alta.) had 32 assists. Calgary's Tom Porta led all players with seven digs.

The Spartans and Dinos will face off again tomorrow night at 7 p.m.

Match Notes: Calgary finished with an impressive 42% attack, while TWU finished at 11%...the Dinos had six blocks to the Spartans two…neither team did much from the back line with TWU finishing with three aces to Calgary's two…
