CALGARY - The fourth ranked University of Calgary Dinos swept the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22) in Canada West men's volleyball action Friday evening in Calgary.

BOX SCORE

The Dinos led the entire opening set by margins of 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical breaks. Calgary went on a 6-2 after the second break taking control of the set 20-14 before winning the set 25-17 thanks to aggressive serving.

The second set was a mirror of the first with Calgary leading 8-4 and 16-13. Calgary jumped out to 18-13 margin after the second technical break forcing the Huskies to burn their second timeout.

Calgary went ahead 23-17 but the Huskies clawed back cutting the margin to 23-20 but a Graham Vigrass kill ended the run giving Calgary a 24-20 margin. The clubs then exchanged points before Calgary won the set 25-21 on a Saskatchewan service error.

The third set was extremely close. Calgary held an 8-7 lead at the first break but Saskatchewan took nine of next 15 points to lead 16-14 at the second technical break.

The close set continued with the clubs deadlocked at 20-20. Calgary finally went ahead 23-22 on a Vigrass kill. The Dinos won the next point going ahead 24-22 on a key block by setter Ciaran McGovern (Grande Prairie, Alta.). Calgary then closed out the set and match 25-22 on another McGovern block.

“Ciaran's block was huge for us,” said Calgary head coach Rod Durrant. “We did some very good things and we have some things to work on. We pulled out the third set in the end. Saskatchewan played very good defense and our first ball handling broke down at times.”

Allen Meek (Sherwood Park, Alta.) and Vigrass led Calgary with 11 and ten kills respectively as the Dinos had a kill percentage of 36%. Jarret Christenson (Bienfait, Sask.) led the Huskies who had a kill percentage of 26% and had 14 kills.

The two clubs close out their regular season weekend series on Saturday evening in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium, with first serve at 8 p.m.
