Erica Morningstar didn’t win the CIS Swimmer of the Year award, but she certainly made a strong case for it at the 2010 CIS Swimming Championships in Toronto.

The award, which is based solely on the FINA points system for the best average of an athlete’s top two swims, went to UBC’s Martha McCabe who won gold in the 200-metre breaststroke. Just six points back of McCabe, however, was Morningstar, who left the event with seven gold medals including individual titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle, the 100 breaststroke (where she beat McCabe head-to-head), and the 200 IM.

Morningstar became the first back-to-back winner of the Sprinter’s Cup in the award’s history after sweeping the 50 and 100-metre freestyle events for the second straight year. She added three relay gold medals for the Dinos, including a new Canadian national record in the 4x100-metre medley relay along with teammates Katy Murdoch, Allison Long, and Seanna Mitchell.

Morningstar was responsible in whole or in part for 200 of the Dinos’ 679 team points – better than 13 of the 20 teams in attendance at the event.
