Wyatt Getty was a standout on defence for a Calgary Dinos team that stymied AUS champion Saint Mary’s all afternoon in Saturday’s Uteck Bowl, played before a crowd of over 5,700 at Huskies Stadium in Halifax.
Already up 29-7 and with under two minutes to go in the first half, Getty, a second-year defensive back out of Henry Wise Wood High School in Calgary, intercepted a second-down pass from Saint Mary’s pivot Jake Creighton at the 30-yard line to snuff out the drive, returning it the the Calgary 45 for QB Erik Glavic and the offence.
Later, with the Dinos up 36-14 in the third quarter and the Huskies marching, Getty picked off another Creighton pass at the Calgary 46, returing it to midfield and ending all hope of an SMU comeback before the hometown faithful.
With the 38-14 final, Calgary earned the right to take on Queen’s in the 45th Vanier Cup on November 28 in Quebec City. The Dinos are looking for their first Vanier Cup since 1995, and Canada West last won the coveted trophy when Manitoba went undefeated through the season in 2007.
