Fourth-year kicker Aaron Ifield made up for lost time on Saturday.
After going 10 quarters without a field goal attempt, the Saskatoon native kicked five field goals and added five converts to end up with 20 points in Calgary’s 50-26 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon in Vancouver, earning Canada West special teams player-of-the-week honours.
Ifield went 5-for-6 on the day, with his first attempt blocked by the UBC line. He bounced back from there to boot three-pointers from 45, 32, 17, 34, and 31 yards to nearly triple his season total to that point. He sits with eight field goals on the season and is tied with teammate Matt Walter for the conference scoring lead with 48 points.
The outburst moved Ifield into 11th position in all-time Canada West scoring with 229 points, which is third on the Dinos’ all-time list, just 45 points away from the school record held by Bruce Parsons (1991-94).
Ifield and the 4-1 Dinos host the 2-2 Manitoba Bisons Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.
