The University of Calgary Dinos women’s soccer team needed six points in a big way this weekend as they took on the Lethbridge Pronghorns in a home-and-home series, and they got them courtesy the right foot of diminutive fourth-year forward Katie Blundell.
Standing just five feet, two inches tall, Blundell ran circles around the Lethbridge defence, potting three goals and adding an assist to lead the Dinos to their pair of 4-2 and 3-0 wins. In Saturday’s opener, she set up Jasmine Maser’s game-tying goal in the 35th minute, then put away one of her own early in the second half to put Calgary up 2-1, a lead they would not relinquish.
Sunday afternoon in windy Lethbridge, Blundell was at it again, scoring the opening and game-winning goal early in the second half before icing the Dinos’ series sweep with her third of the weekend with just 10 minutes left.
The two wins kept the Dinos alive in the Canada West playoff race, sitting just two points back of the fourth and final playoff spot with six games remaining on the schedule. Calgary enjoys a bye over the Thanksgiving weekend before embarking on a tough west coast road swing through top-ranked Trinity Western and UBC Oct. 16-17.
