Mercer Timmis just keeps finding the end zone.
The second-year tailback ran roughshod over the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday night in Edmonton, picking up 214 yards on just 16 carries as the Dinos crushed their provincial rivals 76-21 to improve to 5-0 on the season. And for the second week in a row, Timmis scored four touchdowns.
His first was a career long and came on a 63-yard romp late in the opening quarter. He added two more in the second quarter from 33 and five yards, then capped off his day with an 8-yard major on the first series of the third quarter. It was his last touch of the night, giving him all of his stats in just over two quarters’ work.
The Haskayne School of Business student has 14 all-purpose touchdowns on the year – just three shy of the Dinos’ record of 17 set by Don Blair in his 1995 Hec Crighton-winning season. Timmis has tied the school record of 13 rushing touchdowns in a year and sits just one back of the Canada West record in that category – with three games left on the schedule.
The 5-0 Dinos can clinch first place in Canada West with a win over the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon (7 p.m., Shaw TV).
