Erica Wiebe opened the defence of her 2011 CIS title at 72 kg this weekend with a dominant performance at the Canada West wrestling championships in Regina, winning all four of her matches to claim conference gold.
Two of her wins came by fall, one by a 1-0, 5-0 shutout, and the fourth by default as Wiebe cruised to the gold medal. For her efforts, she was crowned the Canada West female outstanding wrestler.
In addition to her MVP award, Wiebe was also recognized with the Student-Athlete Community Service award. The Dinos’ team captain, she works with several organizations including a group which works to improve the lives of cancer survivors through physical activity. She also sits on the board of directors for the Calgary Amateur Wrestling Association.
Wiebe will head to the CIS Championships in Thunder Bay, Ont. as the favourite to repeat at 72 kg when the meet convenes next weekend.
