Freshman defensive back Doctor Cassama provided a huge spark to the University of Calgary Dinos’ defence in Saturday’s 35-8 Mitchell Bowl win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies at McMahon Stadium.
The Swedish import was all over the field for the Dinos, making big plays everywhere he went. None was bigger than a second-down for the Huskies early in the second quarter, where Cassama sacked SMU quarterback Micah Brown, jarred the ball loose, and recovered the fumble on the Huskies’ 30-yard line. The Dinos didn’t get any points out of the turnover, but it did knock Brown out of the game – and the Dinos feasted on his backup, hauling in three interceptions before the half was over.
Cassama added another fumble recovery late in the half and finished the game with six tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
He and the Dinos will look to repeat their solid defensive performance Saturday afternoon when they face No. 1, undefeated Laval in the Desjardins Vanier Cup at PEPS Stadium in Quebec City.
